The Hartley High School football team dominated visiting Chillicothe Zane Trace in every facet of its 64-7 victory in the first round of the Division V, Region 17 playoffs Nov. 9.
The top-seeded Hawks improved to 10-1 and will play fifth-seeded Liberty Union in a regional semifinal Nov. 16 at a site to be determined.
In addition to piling up 434 yards of offense and having nine players score touchdowns, Hartley gave up just 72 yards to eighth-seeded Zane Trace, which finished 5-6.
“We just started out real fast and that gave us some good momentum,” Hawks coach Brad Burchfield said. “Everybody contributed.”
With 8 minutes, 57 seconds left in the opening quarter, Hartley’s Jacob Mercier scored the first of his team’s six first-quarter touchdowns on a 39-yard run. Quri Hickman added a two-point conversion reception from Jalen Austin to make it 8-0.
Hickman, Sam Mackowiak, Cavell Bennett, Shawn Smith-Davis and Richard Jones followed with touchdowns in the opening quarter as the Hawks built a 43-0 lead.
Cam’Ron Culver led Hartley with 13 rushes for 125 yards, including a 14-yard third-quarter touchdown.
Linebacker Patrick Heinmiller led in tackles with five and defensive back Rian Anderson had an interception.
Zane Trace was held to 13 yards passing and 59 yards rushing on 43 attempts.
“We had nine different guys score and were just the better team,” Burchfield said.
