St. Charles wins first district title


Top-seeded St. Charles scored in the first 15 seconds of the district hockey final en route to a 3-1 victory over second-seeded Olentangy Orange on March 1 at the OhioHealth Ice Haus.

It was the first district championship for the Cardinals who improved to 33-3-2. Orange finished 27-5-3-2.

St. Charles advances to a state semifinal at 1 p.m. Friday, March 7, against Sylvania Northview, which is 16-13-1.

Clayton Klosz scored the opening goal for St. Charles before Orange's Brandon Voytus tied the game at 1 with 8:08 left in the first period. Daniel Schirtzinger gave the Cardinals the lead for good, scoring with 3:29 left in the first period. The teams did not score again until Ryan Cleary laid in an empty-netter with 26.3 seconds to play.

St. Charles goaltender Alex Ward had 19 saves as the Pioneers had 20 shots on goal. The Cardinals had 28 shots on goal as Orange goalie Cameron Beck had 25 saves.
