The Hilliard Darby High School football team got a big game from junior quarterback Nick Power as it opened the season at home by defeating Clayton Northmont 42-21 on Aug. 29.
Making his debut as a starter, Powers ran for 136 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries and threw for 100 yards and a touchdown.
“I’m very proud of the way Nick ran our offense,” Darby coach John Santagata said. “He made good decisions and checks at the line and he put us in a good position to finish our drives with points.”
The defense held Northmont to 72 rushing yards on 12 carries in the first half, and Darby’s offense came up with four big plays that resulted in or led to touchdowns, as the Panthers led 28-7 at the break.
On the Panthers’ second possession, Powers broke loose for a 70-yard run to Northmont’s 4-yard line, and he scored from a yard out two plays later.
Darby turned the ball over on downs at Northmont’s 36 on its following possession, and the Thunderbolts drove down the field to score on a 14-yard pass from Ryan Smith to Jonte’ Broski.
Three plays later, however, Darby answered with a 53-yard touchdown pass from Powers to Zack Donatelli to go ahead 14-7.
Darby engineered a 12-play, 80-yard touchdown drive on its ensuing possession, which was capped by a 20-yard run by Trevor Cox.
Then with just one second left in the first half, Lorenzo McLaurin scored on a 53-yard run.
Cameron Kean and McLaurin added short touchdown runs in the second half for the Panthers.
McLaurin finished with 88 rushing yards and two scores on 10 carries, and Kyle Colvin rushed for 75 yards on 14 carries.
“We were able to establish the run, which helped with our passing game,” Santagata said. “Northmont is very explosive, but I was pleased with the way we reined in their ability to run the ball.”
