The Pickerington High School Central football team overcame a 16-point deficit and snapped a three-game losing streak to Pickerington North with a 30-23 overtime victory over the visiting Panthers on Oct. 3.

With 29.4 seconds left, Central kicker Devon McMillin made a 27-yard field goal to send the game to overtime.

Then in the extra session, quarterback R.J. Williams hit Garon Howard for a 3-yard touchdown pass for the game's final score.

The Tigers then kept the Panthers out of the end zone to seal a victory that improved their record to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the OCC-Ohio Division.

North - which also has lost two games by one point this season - fell to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in the league.

"We knew we could do it and that it might come down to that," Williams said. "It means a lot. We've been talking about this for years now."

North took a 3-0 lead with 7:18 left in the first quarter when Alex Strohm's 45-yard field-goal attempt hit the left upright but went through.

With 5:33 left in the first period, North's Bralen Wilson appeared to be stopped at the line of scrimmage but broke through and ran for 70 yards to the Central 1. Stephvan Tanner scored on the next play to make it 9-0 but the extra-point attempt was blocked by Chaz Holley.

Williams fumbled on the next play, with the Panthers' Kyle Beemiller falling on it at the Central 37.

Four plays later, Wilson had the ball knocked into the air on a run attempt and into the hands of teammate Brandon James, who ran 15 yards for a touchdown as North took a 16-0 lead.

Central cut it to 16-7 on a 5-yard touchdown run by Noah Burk with 1:21 left in the first quarter. The drive was set up by a North fumble that was recovered by Seth Currens.

The Tigers made it 16-14 on a 31-yard run by Burk with 6:46 left in the first half, then took a 20-16 lead with 3:13 to go in the third period when Devon Felder ran for 72 yards after receiving a backward pass from Matt Martello.

North retook the lead at 23-20 with 1:08 to go in the third when Liam Carothers returned an interception 9 yards for a touchdown.

"Devon McMillin made that field goal and our guys just made a gutsy play at the end," Central coach Jay Sharrett said. "We're happy to be 6-0 and 3-0."

"I think both of us had mistakes and that was just the way the ball fell tonight," North coach Tom Phillips said. "I think they were on (the North 45) with about two minutes to go in the game and our defense has to step up there."
