The Upper Arlington High School boys track and field team was fifth and its girls team was sixth at the Division I district 3 meet, which concluded last Saturday at Dublin Coffman.

The top four in each event advanced to the regional, which began last Wednesday and will conclude Friday at Hilliard Davidson. The top four there will advance to state June 6-7 at Ohio State.

At district, the boys team scored 52.5 points as Reynoldsburg (126) won its eighth title in a row, and the girls team totaled 53 points as Reynoldsburg (135) won its third consecutive championship.

"We don't have the number of kids who are going to score big points," coach Dan Rohrs said. "Our district was incredibly tough to get out of. Our focus is getting as many to state meet as we can."

The boys 400-meter relay of Joey Cordle, Matthew Davis, Nathan Davis and Brandon Von Voigt set a program record by finishing in 42.9 seconds, but wound up third. The foursome had set the previous mark of 43.1 at the OCC-Buckeye Division meet a week earlier, also at Coffman.

"I figured they had a chance to get out," Rohrs said. "Now it gets tougher, so we'll see if they can run faster."

Nathan Davis won the 400 in 49.46.

Calina Hilyard turned in the best performance for the girls, finishing second in the 400 (1:00.1) behind Reynoldsburg's Azia Walker (58.08).

Despite tying a personal-best in the pole vault by clearing 13 feet, 6 inches, senior Henry Bruce was unable to advance. The fourth-place finisher also cleared 13-6, but Bruce had more misses.

"With the boys especially, some of them have been around a while and realize what's at stake," Rohrs said.

"Henry not making it out was rough. We knew there were five or six tough vaulters there. For the seniors I let them know how disappointed I am for them, particularly with someone like Henry."
