Upper Arlington High School athletics director Chris Potts announced Wednesday that Jeff Stewart was hired as the next coach of the boys swimming
team.

Stewart coached the Big Cat Club swimming team in State College, Pa., last winter and also has been a head coach at Wheeling Jesuit University and an
assistant at Purdue.

Stewart's diverse experience played a factor in Potts' decision.

"We had a great process and some great candidates for this position," Potts said. "He comes to us with a lot of coaching experience at all levels."

Stewart will take over for Kevin Chapman, who resigned May 12 after pleading guilty to sexual battery and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor.

Chapman, an art teacher, had taught and coached at Upper Arlington since 1989 and was named Ohio boys swimming Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2004. He also guided the Bears to consecutive state runner-up finishes from 2003-2005. He was arrested on rape charges Feb. 26, three days after the
Bears scored 146 points to finish fourth at the state meet behind state champion St. Charles (266) and put on administrative leave.

"It's an extremely important (hire)," Potts said. "(The swimmers) had a difficult three or four months. Now they have a leader that they can look to and call coach and we look forward to having them get a chance to meet with him tomorrow."
