The Upper Arlington Police Division is investigating a reported carjacking that occurred between 5:50 and 6 p.m. Monday evening.

At that time, a 19-year-old female victim said a white male flagged her down near the intersection of Birchcrest and Riverhill roads. The victim, whose name is not being released, said the suspect displayed a small black semiautomatic gun as she neared where he was standing.

"It appears that he forced himself into the car as she was slowing down to see if he needed any help," Officer Heather Galli told ThisWeek.

The suspect is described as about 6 feet tall, muscular, in his late 20s or early 30s, with dark brown hair. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, jeans shorts and blue and white sneakers.

Once the suspect forced himself into the victim's 1987 white Toyota Tercel, he ordered her to drive to a park near the Scioto River north of Fishinger Road. They exited the vehicle and the suspect attempted to assault her. The victim managed to escape while at the park and contacted Columbus police, who located the victim and called Upper Arlington police.

The victim was transported to Riverside Hospital with minor injuries. The suspect remains at large, and appears to have fled the area on foot.

Police plan to bring the victim in to get more information once she has an opportunity to overcome the shock, Galli said.

"Once we bring her in there's potential that we might do some kind of a sketch or computer-generated piece so we can get a better description (of the suspect) as we go through the investigation," she said.

Upper Arlington police are working with Columbus police and other local law enforcement agencies to determine if the Aug. 25 incident may be part of a trend, Galli said.

"We are talking to surrounding agencies to see if they have had any similar accidents," she said.

Anyone with information regarding the investigation is encouraged to call Upper Arlington police at (614) 583-5160.
