With spring now officially under way, prom season has begun.

Rather than planning for her own prom, Upper Arlington High School senior Jessie Pollitt has spent the past couple of months collecting dresses to donate to a local charity that provides prom attire for underprivileged youth.

Pollitt launched the effort as part of her senior thesis. The project will not only help her earn credits toward graduation from UAHS, but will also give her valuable experience when she starts college in the fall.

Pollitt plans to attend Kent State University and major in fashion merchandising.

"I wanted to incorporate fashion into my project," Pollitt said.

For the prom-dress project, Pollitt teamed with her friend and classmate, Marissa Nini, who plans to earn a business degree.

"She wanted to do the marketing," Pollitt said of Nini.

Pollitt and Nini asked friends to look into their closets and decide which garments they were willing to part with.

"Me and my friend Marissa sent out a mass Facebook invite for girls at our school to look for their old dresses," Pollitt said.

Pollitt set a goal of collecting 30 dresses and ended up gathering 35 to donate to an organization called The Fairy Goodmothers, a nonprofit organization based in Dublin that distributes prom dresses to girls in middle and high school.

"I had heard on TV about a couple of organizations where people can donate prom dresses to people who can't afford them," Pollitt said. "I started researching organizations and came across the Fairy Goodmothers."

Pollitt staged a fashion show on March 14 at Advent Lutheran Church in which she, Nini and their friends modeled the donated prom dresses.

"We had the fashion to show off the dresses," Pollitt said.

Fairy Goodmothers will host its 2009 Cinderella's Boutique for high school girls in need of prom dresses on Saturdays, April 4 and 11, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Worthington Square Mall. The organization also accepts monetary donations to purchase racks and hangers and to rent trucks to distribute dresses.

Donations may be mailed to: Fairy Goodmothers, 6724 Perimeter Loop Road, Suite 306, Dublin 43017-3202.
