The Upper Arlington Fire Division will conduct its annual fire hydrant flushing May 4-16.

Active flushing will occur weekdays between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Residents may notice heavy discoloration of water during this time. Residual rust and scale can be present up to 48 hours after the hydrants have been flushed.

Rusty water is not a health hazard, but residents are cautioned to refrain from doing laundry if at all possible. Before laundering, washers should be partially filled until the water runs clear.

Following flushing, allow water to run freely through all plumbing fixtures until it appears clear.

If staining of clothes and other items occurs, the fire division recommends purchasing cleaning agents containing oxalic acid.

Questions may be directed to the fire division at 583-5100.
