Coach Craig Jones thought defense would be a strength for the Wellington School baseball team, but in opening 3-8 the Jaguars gave up an average of 12.7 runs.

There was an encouraging sign last Saturday, however, as they swept Marion-Franklin 11-5 and 18-4.

"I definitely thought at the beginning of the season we were going to be pretty solid," Jones said. "We have some players who are not at 100 percent. They've got some nagging aches and pains and maybe they can't get after it like they should but we can't fall back on that as an excuse.

"The guys acknowledged that they were playing tight instead of having fun. We need to just try to do what we're capable of doing. We have a couple of guys who are always trying to do more than that."

Wellington had stolen 32 bases in 35 attempts through 11 games. Alex Hunnell was 7-for-7 and Tanner Zaas was 5-for-5.

"Believe it or not, it's something we don't work on every day because we spend a lot of time working on the defense," Jones said. "It's just something that has come into place."

•Defense has been a strength for the boys lacrosse team, which gave up 6.6 goals a game as it opened 4-1.

"It seems like the defense is getting better and better at getting the ground balls every game," coach Andrew Farber said. "But we still have a ways to go. We haven't been able to play for awhile so you worried about things getting stagnate because they're only so much you can practice. It's been a challenge but they've done a pretty good job so far."

Wellington beat Bexley 9-8 in overtime April 14, then didn't play again until it beat New Albany 7-6 on April 23. It defeated Olentangy Orange 11-3 last Saturday.

Richard Gullo and Mac Young have led the defense.

"Rich is such a competitor," Farber said. "He's intense every day and every game. Mac has done a good job. He's come in and contributed as a freshman."

The New Albany game was Wellington's fourth decided by one goal.

Against Bexley, the Jaguars scored two goals in the final two minutes. Chris King scored six goals, include one that tied it at 8 with 50 seconds left. In overtime the Jaguars won the faceoff and Ted Emery scored 10 seconds later.
