WHAT IS A PAC AND WHAT DOES IT DO?
A PAC is a Political Action Committee, a legal entity created by the election reform laws. It allows a concerned individual to contribute funds to a single entity. An individual contribution might not be significant, but if it is combined with other contributions, then it can be significant and these concerns can be heard. This also provides a method whereby a record is maintained of those who contribute and how much is contributed, which is public knowledge and a record of the expenditures which likewise, is public knowledge.
WHY DOES THE PAC NEED ME AND WHY DO I NEED THE PAC?
Local issues that effect a large number of individuals in our community require that good people of a similar position combine together to be effective in the campaign world, in which candidates need money to support their campaigns.
IS IT LEGAL?
WHY SHOULD I CONTRIBUTE TO THE PAC?
When these issues come before policymakers, they need input from good people if they are to do the right thing. That is why our grassroots advocacy activities are so important, actions at the local level have a direct impact on you. The PAC gives you an opportunity to have a greater impact and influence on local issues and candidates through pooling resources and dealing from a position of collective strength.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO GIVE?
Contributions are invited and accepted throughout the year. It is important to have a significant amount of funds early in any campaign because often times, having the funds alone is an indication of the strength of the organization and the power of its position and opinion. Many times this alone will carry the day for the PAC's position.
WHO DECIDES WHAT ISSUES RECEIVE SUPPORT?
The Upper Arlington Chamber of Commerce PAC is owned by the Upper Arlington Chamber. Decisions are made in accordance with the UA Chamber of Commerce rules and regulations. Normally, the chairman of the Business Advocacy Committee and the Business Advocacy Committee recommend to the board of trustees those positions in the best interest of the UA Chamber of Commerce. The BAC works diligently to obtain an informal consensus from the individual members of the UA Chamber before making a contribution decision, in addition to having the approval of the board of trustees. So it is largely a consensus of the organization.
WHO MAINTAINS THE BOOKS AND RECORDS OF THE PAC?
The PAC has designated a CPA as treasurer and the person to oversee the UA PAC. Checks are kept in a separate account from the chamber and records of all of the expenditures are open for inspection by the board of trustees and the president of the BAC.
