First Thursday Networking June 4
For the first time, the American Cancer Society's Discovery Shop in Kenny Centre Mall hosted the First Thursday social, featuring English beer, French wine, hors d'ouevres, dips and desserts.

Many Chamber of Commerce members and staff from the ACS came to talk, enjoy a relaxing time after a busy day, and enjoy delicious refreshments. Manager Gayle Musick and several volunteers enjoyed talking to local business people, some of whom were visiting the Upper Arlington resale boutique for the first time.

Many newcomers to the Discovery Shop were surprised and delighted to find so much quality merchandise, attractively displayed. The eye-catching window featuring our June bridal outfit and fine china made an enticing display that had drawn many customers to the shop that week.

This unique upscale resale boutique has been in Upper Arlington for many years. It will be celebrating its 15th anniversary later this year. Starting with only one shop front, the Discovery Shop is now three times larger and is filled with name brand and designer clothing and accessories, household items, books, small collectibles and gently used furniture, all attractively displayed for customers.

Everything in the shop is donated by a generous and supporting community, and all donations generate a tax receipt.

Last year, Musick and her volunteers were happy to donate (after expenses) over $149,000 to cancer research and programs, and we hope to meet or pass this goal this year.

The ACS Discovery Shop is a newcomer to the Upper Arlington Chamber of Commerce, but Gayle Musick and Frances Kreuz, who helps with marketing, have attended several enjoyable networking events hosted by different UA businesses. It is encouraging to see a keen active group like the chamber members meet to describe their products and services.

I have noticed that every month the membership is growing (thanks to Karen Hamilton's efforts) as business owners see the advantage of chamber benefits and the opportunity of talking informally to a variety of people in other commercial enterprises. Recently, a local newspaper had a "shop locally" project in which most of the Kenny Centre shops joined in a full-page advertisement, and the UA Chamber consistently gives us all an opportunity to shop and use UA services and support each other in this difficult economy.
