Franklin County Sheriff

Incumbent Democrat Scott cruises to victory

Democrat Zach Scott will stay at the helm of the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.

Scott defeated Republican challenger Mike Herrell by a vote of 311,135 (64.49 percent) to 171,301 (35 percent), according to final unofficial results from the Franklin County Board of Elections.

Scott was appointed to the office after the 2011 death of longtime Sheriff Jim Karnes.

Scott, who has lived in the Worthington area for the past five years, will have put in more than 27 years with the Franklin County Sheriff's Office at the end of the year.

He and his wife, Tammy, have two children, Zach and Sarah.

According to Scott, he and Karnes talked about him taking over the position before Karnes died because Scott showed the passion, experience and knowledge for the job.

Since taking the job, Scott said he's saved money through cutting overtime and charging people booking fees at jail.

Herrell, who retired from the sheriff's office last year after 30 years, has lived in the Rickenbacker area for 25 years and is married to Nadine.
