This weekend, a local church will offer a musical marking of the season.

Covenant Presbyterian Church's performing arts series will present a production of Gian Carlo Menotti's lauded sacred operetta, Amahl and the Night Visitors, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14.

The production is a concert version of Amahl, with an emphasis on the music without sets, costumes and other staging, Director of Music Rob Rucker said.

Featured performers include local musicians and professional talent from out of town, including Eric McKeever, from New York, as Balthazar and Jaime Hartzell, from Boston, as the Mother.

Covenant Presbyterian members Martin Spencer and Scott Henning will sing the parts of Kaspar and Melchior, respectively, while London, Ohio, youth Luke Peart will sing the role of Amahl.

Also featured will be a group of young dancers from K Studios in Upper Arlington dancing the Shepherd's Dance, and a quartet of music students from Capital University performing the Shepherd's Chorus.

"It's a collaboration of arts organizations in the city featuring multiple disciplines and all ages," Rucker said.

Accompanying the production is a chamber orchestra of local musicians.

Rucker said the production is a use of the church's resources as a gift to the community.

"The Performing Arts at Covenant promotes excellence in the sacred performing arts and supports artists in a community of faith," he said.

Amahl and the Night Visitors is a story of the journey of the Magi to the Nativity. They need a place to sleep along the way when they happen on the home of a poor widow and her son.

"There are multiple spiritual themes, including the healing power of self-sacrifice," Rucker said.

"It's filled with a message of joy."

In lieu of admission, patrons are asked to bring bags of canned goods and nonperishable food to be donated to the local SOS Food Pantry.

The musical celebration continues as the church choir and orchestra present Vivaldi's Gloria during Sunday morning worship on Dec. 16.

Services are at 8:30 a.m. 11 a.m.
