The Upper Arlington Library will say goodbye to a longtime board member Aug. 16 while also hosting its very first fundraiser.
"Get Loud at the Library" is scheduled from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 16 at the library's main branch, 2800 Tremont Road. It will feature stand-up comedy from Johnny DiLoretto; music from the local blues band, The Muddy River Reverends; and food and refreshments sponsored by Dewey's Pizza.
It also will offer library patrons and other members of the public the opportunity to send off former library board of trustees member Amy P. Sharpe, who is relocating to Milwaukee.
According to UAPL Community Relations Manager Ruth McNeil, Sharpe served on the library's board from January 2008 until June of this year.
Sharpe also has been active in a number of local organizations, and the going-away party is being provided by the library and the "Friends of Amy Sharpe."
"Amy has been a local philanthropist and an Upper Arlington Rotary Northwest Woman of the Year," McNeil said. "She's also been a PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) member at Barrington (Elementary School) and Jones (Middle School), and she's been involved in a local book club.
"The Friends of Amy are a group of Amy's friends and they wanted to honor her work in the community and thought the library also would be interested in appreciating Amy's work on the board."
The library also is using the event as its first fundraiser.
In the past, state funding, local library levies and contributions from the Friends of the Upper Arlington Library have financed programming and staff.
McNeil said the library chose to hold a fundraiser to purchase new furniture for the main branch's atrium, which the library refers to as its community gathering space.
"We're going to enhance that community space," she said. "We also want to have some 'show and tell' of the cool library gadgets we have."
Tickets for "Get Loud at the Library" are $50 per person and $75 for couples. They can be purchased via credit card at www.eventbrite.com or by sending a check to the library, 2800 Tremont Road.
Checks should be made payable to the Upper Arlington Public Library; those purchasing tickets should write, "Attention: Get Loud at the Library" in the memo space of their checks.
