UA veterinary hospital seeking OK to expand

A North Star Road veterinary hospital has petitioned city officials for permission to nearly double the size of its 2,000-square-foot facility.
The Upper Arlington Board of Zoning and Planning is slated to decide Oct. 21 if final development plans will be approved for the proposed 1,536-foot expansion at the Upper Arlington Veterinary Hospital, 2447 North Star Road.
BZAP held an initial review of the plans Oct. 7 after Upper Arlington Veterinary owner Dr. Adam Parson recently submitted plans for the project.
The city planning staff also has reviewed the proposal and requested adjustments, including the elimination of four proposed parking spaces, the addition of a bicycle rack and revisions to landscaping plans.
For the most part, however, staff members liked what they saw.
"I think staff is pretty supportive of it, and I think the zoning board is pretty supportive of it," said Justin Milam, an Upper Arlington planning officer. "This is one of those projects we want to see more of in Upper Arlington -- a small business doing well.
"We want to continue to help them however we can."
Parson declined comment on the proposal last week, saying it was "too early" to discuss the project.
Milam said plans for the expansion call for the addition of five examination rooms.
"They essentially need more space and more exam rooms," he said. "This is a complete remodel to the interior and exterior of the building."
Milam said the North Star Road building which houses the Upper Arlington Veterinary Hospital was built in the 1960s and hasn't undergone a significant update since that time.
According to its website, the Upper Arlington Veterinary Hospital is affiliated with the former Apple's Veterinary Hospital, located at 1600 W. Fifth St. in Grandview, which was established in 1946.
The website states Parson purchased the Grandview hospital in 2006 and changed its name to Northstar Animal Care and Pet Boarding.
BZAP's Oct. 21 meeting is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at the Upper Arlington Municipal Services Center, 3600 Tremont Road.
