Start holiday season at Community Marketplace

By

For years, the city and the Upper Arlington Area Chamber of Commerce have been encouraging us all to keep it local when we're out spending our shopping and entertainment dollars.

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, the holiday season is beginning in earnest. What better time to take stock of your many shopping options within our boundaries than as you make your holiday gift-giving list?

If you have yet to get in the shopping mood, never fear -- the UA chamber is here to assist. After Winter Festival gets your holiday gears going the evening of Friday, Dec. 6, be ready to hit the stores in Upper Arlington Saturday, Dec. 7, during the chamber's Community Marketplace Holiday edition. Many area businesses and retailers are offering specials to not only help you with gift ideas, but also to encourage you to shop locally.

Becky Hajost, president of the chamber, notes that the Community Marketplace's goal is to "attract shoppers to our member businesses and online shopping websites and help leverage their marketing dollars."

Why deal with the crowds of a huge mall or shopping center when you can shop only a few minutes from home -- and get great deals at the same time?

A full list of participating businesses can be found at the chamber's website, uachamber.org. Be sure to check back frequently as the list of great ideas and hot deals will only grow as the date approaches. Here's a sneak peak at some of the specials already lined up:

•Rancho Allegre, Kingsdale Shopping Center: If you haven't checked out this Mexican dining delight, now is a great time. Get one free appetizer per table. A $50 gift card purchase will give you an additional $10 gift card; a $100 gift card will give you an additional $20. Yum!

•Nurtur the Salon, West Lane Avenue: Why get your wife or daughter another gift set she'll never use? Let her pamper herself at Nurtur. A $100 purchase in products or gift cards gives you a $25 service gift card.

•Ship print eSell, Kingsdale Shopping Center: Give your loved ones customized T-shirts and enjoy a 20-percent discount.

•VisionOne Optical, 2118 Arlington Ave.: Receive a 20-percent discount on Gucci and Hickey Freeman frames, and 30 percent off Takumi styles as the experts at VisionOne Optical help you find the best style, fit and optimum vision performance.

To support the Community Marketplace and to help shoppers get into the swing of this most festive time of year, First Community Village, 1800 Riverside Drive, will host its second annual open house from 1 to 3 p.m. Dec. 7. Enjoy the Village at its most festive, take a tour of its extensive facilities and partake of various family activities that include pictures with Santa, holiday treats and live music.

Keep posted on the chamber's website as more retailers sign up. See you at the shops Saturday, Dec. 7! Remember, everybody wins when we shop and dine in UA.

Theodore J. Staton is Upper Arlington's city manager.
