Joel Cutler is the new Upper Arlington High School football coach.
UA boys athletics director Michael Schaefer announced Cutler’s hiring Jan. 6. Cutler was an assistant coach for the Golden Bears from 1999-2011 and has spent the past two seasons at Ready.
Cutler’s hire is pending approval at the Jan. 13 Upper Arlington Board of Education meeting.
“Coaching is so fulfilling because a good football program is a great vehicle for helping boys mature into fine young men,” Cutler said in a UA press release announcing his hiring. “I’m excited about the opportunity to return to coaching in Upper Arlington and build on the great traditions here.”
Cutler replaces Mike Golden, who retired after this past season. The Bears were 5-5 overall and 4-3 in the OCC-Central Division.
Cutler, a health and physical education teacher at Greensview Elementary School in the UA district, was 19-5 in two seasons at Ready. He guided the Silver Knights to a Division VI state semifinal this past November, where they lost to eventual state champion Kirtland 10-7 on a last-second field goal.
Cutler is a 1994 graduate of Jonathan Alder, who also played football at the University of Dayton. He also was UA’s girls track and field coach in 2010 and 2011.
Two other coach hirings also are expected to be approved by the UA school board Jan. 13, as Bob McGee has been named girls soccer coach and John Nguyen has been named girls volleyball coach.
McGee, who coached the Bears from 1998-2008 and led them to a Division I state semifinal his first season, guided DeSales to Division II state championships in 1995 and 2011 and a state runner-up finish in 2012.
Nguyen coached Westerville South the past two seasons after serving as coach at Centennial. He also has served as boys coach at Westerville Central.
