The Wellington School boys tennis team defeated DeSales 4-1 on May 13 to improve to 12-0 and faced Columbus Academy in an Ohio Tennis Coaches Association Division II district final May 21.
The Jaguars opened the OTCA tournament with a 5-0 win over Watterson on May 8 and beat Bexley 4-1 in a district semifinal May 12 to set up the match against the Vikings, who were the state runners-up last season.
Wellington will be represented by four players in the Division II district tournament Friday, May 23, and Saturday, May 24, at Academy.
The doubles team of Lincoln Ficek and Nick Sweeney went 3-1 and placed second in the sectional May 16-18 at Columbus School for Girls, as the top four placers in singles and doubles advanced to district.
At sectional in singles, Temidayo Dairo went 4-1 and finished third and Evan Rodgers went 3-2 and placed fourth.
The top two finishers in singles and doubles at district advance to state May 30 and 31 at Ohio State.
Also at sectional, Shabach Tyus went 2-1 in singles and John Schoellkopff and Ben Smith went 1-1 in doubles.
"It's a first for Wellington to get this many boys through to district," coach Tom Haddow said. "Our next goal is to get at least one player or doubles team through to state. Nick and Lincoln need to return and serve better at district. If they do that, they can compete with anyone. Our singles players just need to play hard and do their best."
Boys lacrosse team starts postseason
The boys lacrosse team was seeded 15th in the Division II Central/Northwest Region tournament and played at third-seeded Delaware in a play-in game May 21.
The winner plays host to seventh-seeded Academy or 11th-seeded Marysville in the first round Friday, May 23.
The first-round winner will play at top-seeded Toledo St. Francis, sixth-seeded Sylvania Southview, eighth-seeded Sylvania Northview or 14th-seeded Bowling Green in a regional semifinal Wednesday, May 28.
The regional final is May 31.
Wellington fell to 1-17 with a 13-3 loss to Marysville on May 12.
Girls track team competing in district
The girls track and field team is competing in the Division III district meet this week at Whitehall.
The meet began May 20 with the running preliminaries, continued May 21 with the field events and concludes Saturday, May 24, with the running finals.
The top four finishers in each district event advance to regional Wednesday, May 28, and May 30 at Fairfield Union.
Baseball team ousted from district tourney
The baseball team lost to 13th-seeded Shekinah Christian 12-5 in the first round of the Division IV district tournament May 12 at home.
Jason Ashby and Joe Campbell each had an RBI and Zach Kauffman scored three runs for the ninth-seeded Jaguars, who finished 12-10.
Softball team loses tourney opener
The softball team lost at second-seeded Berne Union 11-0 in five innings in the first round of the Division IV district tournament May 16 to finish 5-14. The 16th-seeded Jaguars had five errors and no hits.
Season ends for girls lacrosse team
The girls lacrosse team lost to host Granville 16-8 in the first round of the Division II South/Central Region tournament May 12 to finish 1-12.
