With his team coming off one of its most consistent offensive performances in a 66-39 win over Mount Gilead in the first round of the Division III district tournament Feb. 17, its struggles to rebound the ball stuck out to Ready High School girls basketball coach Joe Lang.

The Silver Knights, who advanced to the second round last Thursday at Westerville North against Columbus School for Girls, shot 53 percent from the floor against the Indians. Post player Taylor Riggs had one of her better games with 19 points against Mount Gilead, and Christina Bisutti led with 21.

Still, the victory -- when combined with how Ready played in losing its final three of the regular season -- didn't keep Lang from harping on his team's ability to get rebounds.

"The biggest thing for us, and I've really been on the kids about it, is that we are just not rebounding the way that we can," Lang said. "We are just not aggressive enough at getting to the ball."

Ready was shooting for its sixth consecutive district semifinal berth when it faced CSG.

The Silver Knights beat the Unicorns 57-47 on Dec. 13 but lost the rematch 56-53 on Jan. 21.

In the second game, which came four days after Ready posted a 65-64 win over eventual CCL runner-up DeSales, the Silver Knights led 46-39 going into the fourth quarter.

CSG opened the postseason with a 44-41 win over Centerburg on Feb. 17. The Unicorns' last tournament win came in 2002 when they beat West Jefferson 49-39 in the first round. The year before that, CSG edged the Silver Knights 62-60 in the first round and made it to a district semifinal.

•Things went as expected for the wrestling team at the Division III sectional Feb. 21 at Northridge as it advanced five to the district tournament last Friday and Saturday at Steubenville.

That doesn't mean the Silver Knights were completely satisfied.

"A lot of people were happy with it," coach Nickolai Timbs said. "Personally, with me coming from Ohio State, my expectations are always so much higher, especially for myself. I think we could have had seven or eight guys get out, but our lack of experience made it difficult."

Ready had four district qualifiers a year ago, and Josh Hall (112 pounds) and Albert Rozman (119) advanced both years.

David Martello (135) was the only Ready wrestler to reach a sectional final, and he finished second. Also advancing to district were Jeff Beatty (215) and Greg Yoho (103).

"Beatty has what it takes and Martello just grinds it out," Timbs said. "Hall and Rozman showed their true colors and Yoho is a tough scrapper. I knew for sure that we'd get five out, and those are the five I thought would get out.

"I'm feeling really good about these guys. I've been telling them that it's important to go out and wrestle their man. You're not wrestling a school or a singlet."
