Trailing 4-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh against visiting Worthington Christian on April 16, the Ready High School baseball team scored two runs before its rally ended.

Considering it wasn't the first time they've ended up on the wrong end of a close game, the Silver Knights didn't take much comfort that they showed enough mental toughness to keep battling in the final inning.

Four of Ready's first five losses were by one run and the other was by two runs.

"That seems to be the morale boost of it, but we're here to win," coach Harry Caruso said. "Whether it's 4-2 or 4-3, it makes no difference to me. We're close. These are (the type of) baseball games we want to be in. What we have to figure out is what is the one defensive play or the one at bat that we're missing. On the bright side, we've been in every ballgame."

Another positive that was established early was that Tyler Davis is the top pitcher. Although he struggled at times in a 13-12 loss to Hartley on April 8, he allowed two runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings of relief against Worthington Christian.

Two other juniors -- first baseman Matt Magni and infielder Matt Feeney -- also have been key contributors offensively. Senior catcher Jamie Buzard has been another standout, according to Caruso.

"We want some of the seniors to step up," Caruso said. "Somebody has to carry this team on their backs a little bit."

•Boys and girls track and field coach Dean Tower has had plenty to smile about.

Sophomore Emily Morris already has thrown the shot put further than 39 feet and has been averaging 37-0. Other standouts for the girls team have included junior Sarah Battle and freshman Nikki Brown.

Battle jumped 16-11 3/4 in the long jump April 2 in a meet at West Jefferson and 16-4 on April 16 at Bexley. Brown's best time in the 800 meters is 2 minutes, 33 seconds. Brown also has run the 1,600 in 5:56.

The boys team has been led by the 400 relay of Demetrius Clark, Christian Knapper, Jesse Hill and Dana DePassio, Kyle Bergman in the hurdles, Andrew Mantell in the 800 and Jeff Beatty and DePassio in the shot put and discus. Beatty won the shot put (38-4 1/4) and discus (130-0) against Bexley.

"It's been going really well," Tower said. "The boys beat St. Charles and Whitehall (on April 14) and we've had some really good sprint relays. Emily Morris has been throwing well and Sarah Battle has been jumping well."
