Prairie Township Trustees signed off on a one-year contract for services from the Franklin County Sheriff's Department at their regular meeting Wednesday night.

Trustees approved the contract at a cost of $303,484, an increase of 2.5 percent from last year. The township will be billed monthly at $25,290, plus any additional costs associated with overtime, township officials said.

Trustee Steve Kennedy said the increase in the cost of the contract is in keeping with past years.

"We actually get more services than what we pay for," Kennedy said.

According to the contract, the sheriff's department has agreed to provide 152 hours per week police protection to the township. Assigned exclusively to the township is one deputy sheriff for 16 hours a day, seven days a week and one deputy sheriff for eight hours a day, five days a week.

"These are cars available more often and go over and above the base level of protection," township administrator Tracy Hatmaker said.

In other business Wednesday, trustees agreed to send a letter to Senator George Voinovich in support of Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks' efforts to secure $2-million in order to construct a section of the Camp Chase Railroad Trail. When complete, the trail would start on Columbus' West Side, pass through Galloway and extend farther west toward Lily Chapel in Madison County.

"I am requesting the board send a letter of support for a federal appropriations request for the Camp Chase Bike Trail," Hatmaker said.

Trustees said the project is worthwhile because it will benefit businesses by attracting visitors to the area. It will benefit residents, as well, they said, giving them opportunities for healthful activities in their own community.

The next regular meeting of Prairie Township Board of Trustees will take place at 7 p.m. March 10 at the township hall, 23 Maple Drive.
