Ladies Only 5K Run/Walk set for Mother's Day

The success last year of the inaugural Thanksgiving Wattle has led Grove City-native Mark Sigrist to plan another holiday-themed event for the community.

Sigrist is organizing the Ladies Only 5K Run/Walk, which will be held at 8 a.m. Mother's Day, May 12, along the same Grove City course used for the Thanksgiving event.

"We had about 1,100 people participate in the November event, which was amazing for a first-time event," Sigrist said. "I noticed that day that probably about 85 percent of the participants were women.

"I thought, 'Why not an event that's for women only?' " he said. "I think this may be the first women's only event of its kind in Columbus."

The event is designed a fun way for women to come together on a day when they are honored, and to help promote women's health and well-being, Sigrist said.

All women and girls, not just mothers, are welcome to participate, he said.

"We have one family signed up who will have four generations of women participating in the Ladies Only event," Sigrist said.

"We will be supporting two charities with this event, one of which is the Mount Carmel Foundation Women's Health Fund," he said.

The other beneficiary will be KidSMILES, which provides dental care services to central Ohio children in need.

"We will be having a 'One Lucky Guy Lottery,' Sigrist said. "For $5 men can enter a drawing to get the chance to be the one guy who gets to run in the all-women event. All the proceeds from the lottery will go to KidSMILES."

Males ages 10 and older are eligible for the lottery.

The Mother's Day event will include prizes, offer "toddler and above" child care, police-protected streets, race bib, chip time service and women-cut tech shirts for all participants, Sigrist said.

All finishers will receive dark chocolate cinnamon dusted almonds, he said.

The cost to participate is $35 (service fee included) and women 18 and under will receive a $5 discount.

The start/finish line will be at 1239 Lamplighter Drive, located on the east side of Buckeye Parkway, just south of the AMC 14 Theatres and about five minutes southeast of the Stringtown Road exit on Interstate 71.

Parking will be available in front of the movie theater.

Participants can register by clicking on the register button on the event website, columbus mothersdayrun.com, or by downloading a form from the website, filling it out and sending it and a check to Phoenix Events LLC, 1180 Regency Drive, Columbus 43220.
