St. James Lutheran Church's 30th annual Brats and Crafts Festival, Aug. 2-4, at 5660 Trabue Road. Hours are 4:30 to 9 p.m. Aug. 2, noon to 9 p.m. Aug. 3 and noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 4. The event will include authentic German food and beer, live German music and dancing, a hot-air balloon launch Aug. 2 and an 1860s-era "base ball" game at 4 p.m. Aug. 3, played by the Ohio Village Muffins. The weekend concludes with the Columbus Maennerchor and the traditional German Worship Service on Aug. 4. First Gotcha Day 5K Run, Walk or Bike for Adoption, 8:30 a.m. Aug. 3, at the Prairie Oaks Metro Park, Darby Bend Lakes entrance, 2755 Amity Road in Hilliard. The event will begin promptly with a staggered start: 8:30 a.m., bicycles; 8:35 a.m., runners; 8:40 a.m., walkers-parents with small children. There will be prizes for the first finishers in various categories and entries for prizes from local sponsors. The event will be held rain or shine on a trail that may include gravel or dirt. Registration is $40. Hilliard high school coaches, staff or team members qualify for a $25 discount registration. Children ages 12 and younger participate free. Advance registration is required at gotchaday5k. com. Registration includes entry fee, Gotcha Day 5K T-shirt, sponsor goody bag and post-race food and beverages. Children's registration does not include a T-shirt, but a youth T-shirt may be purchased.

West High School, "Back to School Event" for students and their families, 6 to 7 p.m. Aug. 19, at the school, 179 S. Powell Ave. Students who attend will be getting their schedules instead of waiting for the first day of school. There will be refreshments and staff members will be on hand to answer questions that students and/or parents may have.

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Central Ohio Chapter, kick-off event for its 2013 Columbus Light The Night Walk, 6 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 14, at the Embassy Suites, 2886 Airport Dr. by the Columbus Airport. Registration will begin at 5:30 p.m. This event will give participants an opportunity to generate excitement about the fall walk, get fundraising tips and pick up fundraising supplies and materials. During a Light The Night Walk, participants carry illuminated balloons, white for survivors and patients, red for supporters and gold in memory of loved ones lost to cancer.
