Board gives Garside 5-year contract extension

Treasurer in line for COLA raises, 3 percent annual bonuses, full pension pickup through July 31, 2020

The South-Western Board of Education unanimously approved an early five-year contract extension with Treasurer Hugh Garside at its meeting Monday, Aug. 11.

The extension will run Aug. 1, 2015 through July 31, 2020.

Garside's annual base salary for the first year beginning Aug. 1, 2015 will be $149,000. An additional 3 percent will be added to the salary if Garside completes an MBA after Aug. 11, 2014.

In each year of the contract, the board will review the salary prior to Aug. 1 and upon a satisfactory annual evaluation of Garside's performance, will grant the treasurer a performance bonus equal to 3 percent of his base pay.

He will also receive a cost of living increase each year of the contract in an amount equal to the Consumer Price Index for the preceding year.

The board also will pay 90 percent of the premium of the treasurer's health insurance and purchase term life insurance for him in the amount of $250,000.

As did the former contract, the new one also calls for the board to pay directly Garside's 10 percent share of the treasurer's total retirement contribution to the School Employees Retirement System of Ohio plus all retirement contributions on this picked-up amount.

In 2012, the board approved a modification of Garside's contract, which set his base salary at $134,450 beginning Aug. 1, 2012. Through cost of living increases it currently has reached $139,333. But that former contract also included a $6,000 car allowance, which is not part of the new one, and no insurance contribution from Garside.

District officials said with the car allowance and insurance changes, the total compensation increase -- before the COLA adjustment -- is expected to be 2 percent a year, or 12 percent over the six years.

Administrators appointed

In other business at the Aug. 11 meeting, the board approved the appointments of three building administrators.

Lori Balough was granted a two-year contract to serve as principal at Finland Middle School effective July 29, 2014.

Balough has served as assistant principal at Westland High School since 2010.

Holly Carr was hired as an assistant principal at Central Crossing High School, effective July 17.

She has been serving as assistant principal at Brookpark Middle School and previously worked as a language arts teacher at Central Crossing and Westland high schools.

The board also approved Chad Clark as the new assistant principal at Brookpark, effective Aug. 7.

Clark served as a science teacher in Westerville before coming to South-Western.
