Another upset win gives Ready district title

By

The Ready High School softball team scored five times in the third inning and got a two-run home run from junior pitcher Julia Hall in the seventh on the way to beating fifth-seeded North Union 8-2 in a Division III district final May 25 at Pickerington Central.

The Silver Knights improved to 13-15 and advanced to a regional semifinal against Brookville on May 29 at Wright State. The regional final is June 1 at the same site.

Ready also beat third-seeded Northridge and fourth-seeded Liberty Union in the district tournament.

“With us being the No. 16 seed, I don’t think a lot of people thought we could do this,” said sophomore shortstop Madison Gatley, who had an RBI double.

North Union took a 1-0 lead in the first when Sydney Girton walked and scored on a groundout.

In the third, Hall opened by getting hit by a pitch, second baseman Sammy Hawkins singled and left fielder Hailey Bryan tied it with an RBI single. Catcher Emily Finchum then hit a ball through the shortstop’s legs to make it 2-1 and Gatley, first baseman Shannan Waldo and center fielder Haylee Patel each had an RBI single to make it 5-1.

North Union cut it to 5-2 in the fifth but Hall opened the sixth with a single, Hawkins walked, Bryan was hit by a pitch and Finchum walked with the bases loaded to make it 6-2.

Right fielder Molli Abbruzzese reached on a one-out single and scored on Hall’s homer in the seventh.

Hall struck out 11 while pitching a complete game.

It was the first district title for second-year Ready coach Jen Goff, who was a part of district championship teams as a player for the Silver Knights in 1998 and 1999.
