A successful passing game and a defense that produced three takeaways helped the Ready High School football team capture the Division VI, Region 21 championship Nov. 22 at Gahanna.
The second-seeded Silver Knights scored on each of their first five possessions and beat fourth-seeded Newark Catholic 48-21 for its first regional title since 2007.
The win improved Ready’s record to 12-1 and moves it into a state semifinal Nov. 29 against Kirtland at a site to be announced.
Newark Catholic, which also lost to Ready 26-14 on Aug. 30, finishes 11-2.
Quarterback Matt Yoho completed 18 of 21 passes for 244 yards with three touchdowns to lead the Knights.
“We just took what the defense gave us and it worked out tonight,” Yoho said.
Ready took a 7-0 lead on a 4-yard touchdown run by DeAndre Golden to complete a 14-play, 80-yard drive on its first possession.
Newark Catholic answered with 3 minutes, 18 seconds left in the opening quarter when quarterback Chayce Crouch hit Luke Ceneviva for a 24-yard touchdown, but the Knights made it 14-7 on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Yoho to Kelly Culbertson with 9:45 to go in the first half.
A fumble by the Green Wave’s Hunter Nance at the Ready 48 set up the Knights’ next score, a 1-yard run by Akili Taylor with 3:21 left in the second quarter.
Ready then made it 27-7 on a 2-yard pass from Yoho to Alvin Knox with 9.9 seconds left in the first half.
Newark Catholic cut it to 27-14 when Crouch hit Anthony Wing for a 53-yard touchdown on the second play of the third quarter, but Yoho hooked up with Hunter Clanin for a 31-yard scoring pass with 7:01 to go in the third quarter to make it 34-14.
The Green Wave got a 21-yard touchdown run from Wing with 5:01 left in the third. Newark Catholic got the ball later in the quarter at its own 41 after a blocked punt, but Ready’s Nick Skordilis recovered a fumble by Crouch on the next play.
Crouch finished 19-for-35 passing for 212 yards and Wing had 78 yards receiving and 25 yards rushing.
Nine receivers caught passes for the Knights.
“They moved the ball with the wind,” Green Wave coach Bill Franks said. “You can’t turn it over like we did or you get beat. We didn’t play well enough to win.”
