Before the 2008-09 school year began this week, Superintendent Dan Good, accompanied by other district administrators, spent time in each building, meeting principals, inspecting maintenance programs and talking about goals.

"I'm thrilled to see so many staff members around this summer," Good said as he toured Cherrington Elementary last week with the school's new principal, Andy Heck; chief of academic affairs, Diane Conley; Jeff LeRose, executive director of facilities and operations; and Greg Viebranz, executive director of communications.

This school year brings many district changes and challenges, Good said, including a new and streamlined organizational structure, changes in leadership at many schools and strategies to help every Westerville student achieve their academic potential.

Good said he plans to make himself more visible in the community by attending more athletic events and school programs, including chats with staff members during school visits, and through a series of "Coffee and Conversation" meetings with community members.

"These informal meetings are intended to open a new line of communication between our district and our community in a casual setting," Good said. "There will be no set topics or agendas. The members of our executive team and I simply want to be accessible and give people an opportunity to reconnect with our school district in a relaxed environment."

He said he hopes the casual settings will prove to be less intimidating for community members.

"Sometimes people want to connect with us but they just don't know where or how to begin," Good said. "We hope that our community takes advantage of these opportunities to meet with us -- we're looking forward to it."

Morning meetings will be held on the first Friday of every month at various locations around the community.

The first "Coffee and Conversation" is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. Sept. 5 at Panera Bread, 555 S. State Street. Others are planned at:
