After having a six-game winning streak snapped last Friday with a 67-52 loss to Westerville South, the Westerville Central High School boys basketball team is trying to regain its touch.

The Warhawks got back to action against Westerville North last Tuesday and will play host to Marysville on Friday. Central beat the Monarchs 68-43 on Dec. 19.

"We talked about sharing the wealth a little bit and finding the open guys and having confidence in everybody to make plays," coach Todd Minney said. "We know we have some good depth and we just have to use that and get the ball inside a little bit more."

Marysville was 2-10 overall and 0-8 in the OCC-Cardinal Division before its game against Olentangy last Tuesday. The Monarchs had lost their last five.

In the first meeting, Jerrell Fernandez led the Warhawks with 20 points followed by Jourdan Devoll with 13 and Max VanMeter with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Key players for Marysville have been juniors Trevor Morris (6-foot-2 guard) and Mike Romesburg (6-5 forward) and seniors Paul Devine (6-1 guard) and Michael Waite (6-0 guard).

"We have to come out and we have to play a really hard defensive game and attack the interior of their defense," Minney said. "We have to put points up from the inside in that game."

Central will look to avenge an earlier loss to Dublin Scioto when the teams play Tuesday at Scioto. The Irish entered last Tuesday's game against Westerville South at 12-1 overall and 8-0 in the OCC-Cardinal.

Scioto defeated the Warhawks 52-43 on Dec. 23. The Irish outscored Central 25-6 in the final quarter. Guard Bradley McDougald (6-2) led Scioto with 20 points.

"We played three great quarters against them last time and the goal is to put together four," Minney said. "That's going to be our focus -- playing four full quarters and playing as hard as we can on defense and letting the offense take care of itself."

"We know that we can beat them," Fernandez said. "When it's the fourth quarter we have to finish the game. We're not finishing a game."

Before last Tuesday, Fernandez remained the team's leading scorer at 19.1 points per game. VanMeter was averaging 15 points and team-best 8.1 rebounds.

•The girls team will look to complete a season sweep of Marysville when the teams play Friday at Marysville.

The Warhawks defeated the Monarchs 41-36 on Dec. 19 for their lone OCC-Cardinal win before last Wednesday's game against Westerville North.

Marysville was 4-10 overall and 2-7 in the OCC-Cardinal before its game against Olentangy last Tuesday.

"I think we have a chance if we bring our effort, we have a good week of practice and do the things that we have been doing since the holidays," coach Doug Etgen said. "We've had some stretches where we haven't skill-wise played particularly well, but Marysville is a game that we can certainly be competitive in."

Central will face a stiff test Tuesday when it plays host to first-place Scioto. The Irish were 14-1 overall and 9-0 in the league before their game against Westerville South last Tuesday. Scioto pulled away in the second half to defeat the Warhawks 62-26 on Dec. 23.

"Scioto is just so skilled offensively," Etgen said. "You just have to really pick your poison with them with who you're going to try to shut down or if you're just going to close off driving lanes and let them shoot. They're incredibly balanced and skilled. I think we'll be up for the challenge. I expect the girls to give a good effort, but obviously we're going to have to play our best to compete with them."

Central fell to Westerville South 53-43 last Saturday. Aly Jurcenko led the Warhawks with 10 points. Through 14 games, Jurcenko was averaging 7.8 points a game followed by Jessica Wooden at 7.6.
