Westerville North High School junior Ralph Hill verbally committed Wednesday to play men's basketball at Dayton.

Hill, a 6-foot-6, 200-pound post player, averaged 19 points, 9.1 rebounds, 3.1 blocks and 1.5 assists last season and was first-team all-OCC-Cardinal Division and honorable mention all-district in Division I.

"I like the uptempo game that (the Flyers) play and I really like the atmosphere there," Hill said. "I went to a couple of games and it was amazing how the fans really get into it."

Hill is third on the program scoring list with 968 career points behind 1995 graduate Shaun Stonerook and 1988 Tim Smith. He has 464 rebounds, second behind Stonerook.

"One of the major reasons I picked Dayton was because of the proximity to home," Hill said. "It's only an hour and a half away and my mom (Vickie Stewart) can go to the home games. I play better when she's at the game."

Hill also considered Akron, Illinois, Georgia Tech and Notre Dame.

"He had an offer from Ohio University and Ball State was also interested as well as Akron," North coach Kevin Thuman said. "Illinois, Georgia Tech and Notre Dame came in late in the game after his performances in the tournament this year. But Dayton was there from the beginning and Ralph really felt comfortable with them."
