Former U.S. congressman John Kasich plans to formally announce his intentions to run for governor at a public event in Westerville Monday.

The outdoor event takes place at 5:30 p.m. June 1 at the Everal Barn & Homestead, 60 N. Cleveland Ave.

Those wishing to attend the announcement event on Monday can print tickets, which are free, from the Kasich for Ohio Web site, www.kasichforohio.com.

Kasich, a Republican, served in the U.S. House of Representatives from Ohio's 12th Congressional District from 1983 to 2001. He filed paperwork May 1 with the Ohio Secretary of State's Office creating Kasich for Ohio, which will permit him to raise money and hire a staff for the anticipated campaign against incumbent Gov. Ted Strickland, a Democrat, next year.

Kasich is a longtime Westerville resident. His collection of memorabilia from his time in office is housed in the Westerville Public Library.
