Uptown Westerville has gone to the dogs.

Uptown Westerville has gone to the dogs.

Or at least it will this Friday when the Westerville Visitors and Convention Bureau hosts the Dog Days of Summer as its monthly Fourth Friday event.

From 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, residents are encouraged to bring their dogs to Uptown for events such as the Best in Street Dog Show and the Mutt March. Proceeds from the evening's events will benefit the Capital Area Humane Society.

For non-canines, the event will feature author Marlane Kennedy, who will read her book, "The Dog Days of Charlotte Hays," at 4:30 p.m. in the Otterbein College Library.

Kennedy's visit was arranged by Kriss Rogers, owner of Outside Envy, as part of the store's second anniversary.

Beginning at 6 p.m., Outside Envy will give away more than 140 copies of Kennedy's books in exchange for donations to the Humane Society. Money, dog biscuits, bowls, toys, blankets and leashes will be accepted.

"It's really a win-win," Rogers said. "We're going to get books to the kids and we're raising money for the Capital Area Humane Society."

Kennedy will be on hand to sign the books, which were purchased with donations from the Otterbein Friends of the Library, Uptown businesses and residents.

Also during this month's Fourth Friday, author Sheila Boneham will be at Foul Play Mystery Book Shop, 27 E. College Ave., to sign copies of her book, "Rescue Matters," which focuses on helping people to find their perfect pets.

Throughout Uptown, dog rescue groups will be on hand to share information about adoptable dogs, and vendors will provide products and services for dogs and their owners.

Cryan Veterinary Hospital will offer free dental exams and nail trimmings in the courtyard of the Municipal Building, 29 S. State St.

The Westerville divisions of police and fire will be in Uptown to entertain children with McGruff the Crime Fighting Dog, P.C. the Robot Police Car and Sparky the Fire Dog.

Also during this month's Fourth Friday, Uptown shops will have extended hours, the Westerville Puppet Posse will perform and there will be story times with the Westerville Public Library, karaoke with Art and Dave, a demonstration by the Taoist Tai Chi Society and a performance by Avalon Nine on the AAA Ohio Auto Club Music Stage at the corner of North State and East Home streets.

Registration forms for the Best on the Street Dog Show are available at Captivating Canines, 31 N. State St.

The Mutt March will begin at 8 p.m. on West College Avenue. The march will proceed south on South State Street, west on West Park Street, north on Knox Street and west on West College Avenue.

The march will conclude with awards and a doggie blessing at 9 p.m. on West College Avenue.
