Sixteen Westerville Block Watch groups will take to the streets Aug. 3 at 13 block parties celebrating National Night Out.

Events will take place between 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Each party will be attended by Westerville police and mascots, such as Big Man Blow-Up Police Officer, Officer McGruff and PC the Patrol Car. At some locations, police will offer rides in patrol cars.

"We'll be at all of them, and we have kind of scheduled out where we'll have different characters going out to the different events," said Carrie Ryan, crime prevention specialist for the department.

National Night Out offers an important opportunity for the city police department and Block Watches to show their unity in preventing crime, she said.

"National Night out is so important because it shows the community that the police department and the residents have a good relationship, and we're trying to work together to prevent crime," Ryan said. "A department our size, we can't be everywhere, so we depend on residents to help deter crime."

National Night Out also provides the city's Block Watches with an opportunity to come together in a fun way, Ryan said.

"It's also a fun night for those neighborhoods to get out and celebrate what they do," she said.

The celebrations are expected to attract up to 1,000 residents, Ryan said.
