September has seen a record month of cats and kittens dropped off at CHA Animal Shelter, so officials there say they are hoping a $5 adoption special will help find families for all of these homeless animals.

"CHA is over capacity, with its highest number of feline residents yet in 2010," according to the announcement.

As a result, the shelter will be adopting out cats and kittens for a fee of only $5 every Saturday during the month of October.

CHA Animal Shelter is located at 3765 Corporate Drive, in northeast Columbus, just south of Westerville.

The shelter will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. on all Saturdays in October for the $5 promotion. The shelter is also opened Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 4 p.m.

In the announcement, CHA Animal Shelter director Stephanie Wimbish reminded people that while the upfront expense of adopting a cat or kitten may be lower in October, it is still important to look at the ongoing cost of a new pet.

"Pets are family," she was quoted as saying. "They require regular check-ups, ongoing vet care, quality food and toys. You must also have time to care for a pet; exercise and daily attention are important to the health and wellbeing of your new family member."

All animals are spayed or neutered, micro-chipped and up to date on vaccinations prior to adoption from the shelter.

Potential adopters may visit CHA Animal Shelter's website for a complete listing of available dogs and cats at www.CHAAnimalShelter.org. There is also an adoption application online that can be filled out prior to coming to the shelter.

"When looking to adopt, all family members should make arrangements to be available to meet the animal prior to finalizing an adoption," the announcement stated.
