Walk MS will be held Saturday, April 16, at the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium, 9990 Riverside Drive in Powell.

Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. for the fundraising event for multiple sclerosis, a chronic disease of the central nervous system. The walk is presented by Giant Eagle and EMD Serono/Pfizer Inc.

Both individuals and teams walk during the event. The average participant raises about $225. Funds raised provide for local programs and support 22 research projects conducted in Ohio.

In a news release, National Multiple Sclerosis Society president Jane Kramer said, "All the funds from the event provide direct support for people living with multiple sclerosis and funds MS-related research to find a cause and cure for the disease."

In central Ohio, Walk MS events also will be held on April 16 in Lancaster and Newark. Walk MS will be held on Friday, April 15 in McConnelsville.

More than twice as many women as men are diagnosed with MS. Most are between 20 and 50 years old. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. Progress, severity, and symptoms in any one person with MS cannot be predicted.
