Residents of 16 Westerville neighborhoods will take to the streets Aug. 2 to have a good time while sending a message to criminals: You're not welcome here.

The scheduled block parties are part of National Night Out, which will run from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

The 27-year-old program bills itself as "America's Night Out Against Crime" and aims to raise awareness about crime and drug prevention, support local crime-prevention efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and the ties between neighborhood groups and local police, and send a message that neighborhoods are organized to fight crime.

As the events are organized by individual groups, events during National Night Out will vary, but include potlucks, hula-hoop contests, music, face-painting, raffles, flashlight walks, tricycle races and balloon launches.

Representatives from the Westerville Division of Police will be on hand during National Night Out events to socialize, bring visitors such as Officer Friendly and PC the Patrol Car, and to provide canine demonstrations.
