Westerville's schools earned high marks on the state report cards, with the vast majority of buildings earning "excellent" or "excellent with distinction" marks on official results released last week.

All three high schools once again were graded "excellent."

Only four schools earned the "excellent with distinction" mark this year, compared with six last year. Blendon Middle School and Longfellow Elementary School improved from "excellent" last year to "excellent with distinction," and Longfellow and McVay elementary schools repeated the grade from last year.

Rankings for six schools dropped from last year to this year. Alcott, Annehurst, Central College and Hanby elementary schools dropped from "excellent with distinction" to "excellent," while Huber Ridge and Wilder elementary schools dropped from "excellent" to "effective."

In addition to Blendon Middle School and Longfellow Elementary School, Heritage Middle School and Pointview Elementary School increased their scores, from "effective" to "excellent."

Overall, the Westerville City School District was graded "excellent with distinction," which was announced to the district's board of education Aug. 22.

To earn the "excellent with distinction" grade, districts and schools must meet the criteria for an "excellent" rating and score "above" on the value-added portion of the report card, meaning students showed more growth in learning than the state expects in one year.
