Sew different
Art quilts feature unusual materials and designs
The quilts on display at Gallery 202 aren’t meant to keep out the fall chill.
These quilts are all about art, using nontraditional patterns, materials and colors.
“Art quilts don’t look like traditional quilts that you would see on your grandmother’s bed. These are a variety and different approaches to doing quilts,” Gallery 202 owner Renee Kropat said. “They’re designed, abstracted. One looks like a window, one looks like a Sudoku.”
The exhibition, “Art from the Heart,” was put together by the Art Quilt Alliance. It will be on display through Sept. 30 at Gallery 202, 38 N. State St., with an artists’ reception from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 18.
The quilts come in a variety of sizes, ranging from about 16-inches by 18-inches to 3-feet by 7-feet, Kropat said, and feature a variety of styles.
There is a frog-shaped quilt, a flower-shaped quilt and three-dimensional quilts. Some of the quilts feature embroidery, beading, hand-dyed materials and even found objects.
“It makes you think outside the box. Since these are not traditional quilts and you come up and look at them, you’ll see some traditional approaches, but you’ll see them break traditional,” Kropat said. “The colors that they use are pretty traditional in many ways, but when you start putting them together, you see people who like to use embroidery in their quilts, 3D quilts.
“We have a lot who like to use beading in their quilts. We even have one with a plastic bottle in it.”
Also, unlike traditional quilts, the art quilts are made to be viewed as two-sided works of art, Kropat said.
“The backside is just as beautiful as the front side. That’s a little unusual, as well,” she said.
Many of the quilts also are on sale for the duration of the exhibition, Kropat said, with average prices ranging from $150 to $350 with some more expensive pieces, as well.
