With rising gas prices and decreases in home values and Ohio's median incomes, the federal government must be focused on reinvigorating the economy, U.S. Sen. Rob Portman (R-Cincinnati) told a group of Westerville business leaders March 19.

"It's all about the economy and jobs," Portman said.

Portman spoke to a group of Westerville business leaders during a Westerville Area Chamber of Commerce CEO roundtable March 19.

Stimulus spending and growing government spending will not bring about a full economic recovery, Portman told the group of about 30 people.

"If we could spend our way out of this, we would have done it. If it was just about spending, we'd be in good shape with the spending we've done," he said. "We ought to be getting spending under control and making the government leaner and leaner."

He said the government should focus on getting the economy moving by reducing regulations, reforming taxes and finding alternative sources of fuel, Portman said.
