'Westerville's Got Talent' tryouts set next week
Westerville's got talent, and the Lions Club hopes to showcase it.
The group will hold open auditions next week for Westerville's Got Talent, a competition scheduled for Nov. 10.
The open auditions will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 26, 27 and 28 at the American Legion Hall, 393 E. College Ave.
"It's an open audition; basically, just show up. There's no fee. It's free to come and try out," club spokesman Don Niebling said.
"We're keeping it open to any talent, any age. We're trying to keep it local, though -- keep it the Westerville area."
From the open auditions, Niebling said the group hopes to select 16 to 18 acts, which do need to be five minutes or less, to create a two-hour talent competition.
The first-prize winner Nov. 10 will earn $500 and a trophy. A second-place prize of $250 also will be awarded.
Westerville's Got Talent capitalizes on an idea carried out by the Leos -- the high-school version of the Lions Club -- two years ago.
The group put on their own Westerville's Got Talent event, but then the organizers moved on to college.
This year, the Lions Club was looking for a new fundraiser to replace their standard sale of Entertainment Books and decided to recreate what was a successful event for the Leos, Niebling said.
"We're hoping to build this into one of our major fundraisers for the year," he said. "It's a lot of work to put it on, getting the talent and getting the judges. ... We're giving it a shot this year."
Niebling said the Lions Club is hoping to find a variety of acts and talent types to create an entertaining show for the community.
"What we're hoping to see is some really good performances of the singing or dancing or whatever it is, and hopefully, something novel, someone that has a unique talent that we just don't see on a routine basis in local shows," Niebling said.
For the talent show, the Lions Club will sell $10 admission tickets and likely will offer concessions and a raffle.
Those interested in auditioning for the show can attend the open auditions or contact Niebling for more information at 614-901-0947.
