Local Civil War history focus of cemetery walk

By

The Westerville Public Library's Local History Center will offer walk at Otterbein Cemetery from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14.

The walk will focus on Westerville's connection to the Civil War.

The walk will center on seven Civil War veterans buried in the cemetery. They include a surgeon, a chaplain, a man who served in the Union Navy and a soldier who served in the Massachusetts 54th, the African-American unit at the center of the movie Glory.

Those who take the walk will be directed to those graves, where they will hear Civil War history, as well as the stories of those veterans. The story of the "Squirrel Hunters" called to defend Cincinnati also will be shared.

The cemetery will be closed to traffic during the program, and the mausoleum will be open to visitors.

Admission is free, and no registration is needed. Visitors are asked to enter at Walnut and Grove streets anytime between 1 and 4 p.m. and stroll at their leisure.
