Delayed State Report Cards

Westerville schools 'Excellent with Distinction'

The "official" release of State Report Cards last week confirmed what school officials suspected: The Westerville City School District once again earned the top possible marks, rating Excellent with Distinction for the 2011-2012 school year.

The report cards generally are issued in late August of each year, but they were delayed last year as the state investigated several Ohio school districts -- not including Westerville -- for falsifying data.

With the Excellent with Distinction rating, the district met all 26 state indicators, made adequate yearly progress, scored "above" on the value-added measure and earned its highest ever performance index score of 102.9.

The performance indicator increases as more students score as "advanced" and "accelerated" on state tests. The value-added measure rates whether fourth- through eighth-grade students progressed as much as the state expects over the course of a year in reading and math.

Individual district schools also ranked well on the 2011-2012 State Report Cards, with five buildings earning "Excellent with Distinction" -- one more than last year's four.

Huber Ridge Elementary School showed the most improvement, increasing from "Effective" last year to "Excellent with Distinction."

Genoa Middle School, Mark Twain Elementary School and Central College Magnet School advanced from "Excellent" to "Excellent with Distinction," while Emerson Magnet School maintained that rating from the previous year.

All other district schools were ranked "Excellent," save two: Pointview and Wilder elementary schools were rated "Effective."

That was a drop from "Excellent" for Pointview, while it was the same score as in the previous year for Wilder.

The grades for individual Westerville schools for the 2011-2012 year were:
