Matthew Doel, an eighth-grade student at Walnut Springs Middle School, has been named an Ohio National Geographic Bee semifinalist by the National Geographic Society.
This marks the third year in a row that Doel has qualified for the state level of competition in the bee, which is sponsored by The National Geographic Society, Google and Plum Creek. Doel is one of the top 100 competitors from 336 schools in Ohio to qualify for the state contest.
The students will compete Friday, April 5 at Grandview Heights High School. The winner of that contest will represent Ohio in the national finals May 20-22, in Washington, D.C., Those students will compete for a $25,000 college scholarship and a trip to the Galapagos Islands.
