Concert Band spring concert to feature guest soloist


The sounds of virtuoso brass will fill the air this spring! The Westerville Concert Band will perform its annual Spring Concert Sunday, May 5, featuring guest soloist Dr. Thomas W. Zugger, trombonist.

The concert will take place at 3 p.m. in the auditorium at Westerville Central High School, 7118 Mt. Royal Ave. The 75-member Concert Band, under the direction of Music Director Richard Suddendorf and Assistant Conductor Victoria Straub, will perform a challenging and diverse program,

Dr. Zugger has enjoyed an international career as a performer, educator and composer. He is currently the associate professor of trombone and euphonium at the Capital University Conservatory of Music. As a performer, he currently is principal trombone in the Newark/Granville Symphony and has appeared with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, and at the 18th Macau China International Music Festival. He has performed for national tours of numerous Broadway musicals and has backed many popular performers. His latest CD Dances and Dreams: recital music for trombone was awarded a Grammy entry list nomination for 2010.

Dr. Zugger holds degrees from the University of Michigan, Michigan State University and a doctorate of musical arts in Trombone Performance from Ohio State University.

Symphony will welcome home Siwoo Kim

The Westerville Symphony will present the last installment of its Masterworks Series Sunday, May 19 in the auditorium at Westerville South High School, 303 S. Otterbein Ave.

Treat yourself to classical masterpieces by Mozart and Beethoven and welcome home Westerville's own Siwoo Kim, playing Mozart's brilliant Violin Concerto No. 5. After attending Westerville South and The Julliard School in New York City, Siwoo Kim is quickly becoming a popular fresh face in the classical music world. Kim has been a featured soloist with the Houston, Springfield (Mo.), Tulsa and Columbus symphony orchestras and is a winner of the Sejong Music Competition.
