Community invited to Otterbein homecoming events

Otterbein University will welcome the Westerville community to its homecoming celebrations this weekend.

Homecoming events will begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, with the Third Annual Young Alumni Awards, which celebrates accomplished recent graduates, at Roush Hall, 27 S. Grove St.

There will be a lineup of community events during Cardy's Rockin' Homecoming Saturday, Sept. 21. The celebration will include a 5K, parade and a block party with music, food and Cardy's Kids Zone.

The sixth annual charity Homecoming 5K, which is organized by the Otterbein chapter of Up 'til Dawn and benefits St. Jude Children's Research Hospital will begin at 8:45 a.m. at the Campus Center, 100 W. Home St. Registration is $10.

Beginning at 9 a.m., runners from 20 colleges and high schools will compete in a cross-county invitational at the University's Cross Country Course next to the Westerville Community Center, 350 N. Cleveland Ave.

The homecoming parade will begin at 10 a.m. at North West Street and Martin Drive and will follow a new route, traveling south to West Park Street, east to North Grove Street and ending in the Rockin' Homecoming Block Party on Grove Street in front of the Campus Center.

The block party will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will feature live music, food, children's activities, service projects and a small farmer's market.

The homecoming football game against Wilmington University will be at 2 p.m. in Memorial Stadium on Center Street.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for students and children.

The men's soccer team will take on Ohio Midwestern at 1 p.m., and the women's team will take on Manchester University at 3:30 p.m. Both matches will be held at the soccer field north of the Campus Center. Admission is free.

Also that day, there will be a seminar presented by the Otterbein Admission Office for parents and college-bound students, titled "Tips on the College Search Process," at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in room 118 of the Courtright Memorial Library, 138 W. Main St.

An academic spotlight on the Department of Nursing, a display of the Otterbein Master Plan and self-guided tours of the remodeled Courtright Memorial Library are also planned.
