Rotary to honor veterans with Nov. 9 run

The Westerville Rotary will honor veterans by raising money through a 5K walk and run that will benefit Team Red, White and Blue, a local charity that works with returning veterans.

The Rotary Honor Veterans 5K will begin at 9 a.m. Nov. 9 at Alum Creek Park North in Westerville, 221 W. Main St.

It will be preceded by a short ceremony at 8:45 a.m.

This marks the third year for the Rotary run. Each year, organizers have selected a different local organization that serves veterans as the race beneficiary. In the last two years, the race raised a total of $8,000.

Team Red, White and Blue strives to help returning veterans reconnect with their communities by engaging them in social and physical activities, such as running, cycling, picnics and ball games.

Registration for the race is $37, and participants can register online in advance at RotaryHonorsVets5K.com or at the park on the day of the race, beginning at 7:30 a.m. Registration will close at 8:30 a.m. on race day.

Participants can register as individuals or teams, and the teams that have the most members and the most pledges will be recognized.

The first 500 registrants will receive a long-sleeved T-shirt, knit cap, patch and race medal, as well as a runner goodie bag.

There also will be a kids fun run, which has a registration fee of $8. Children who register in advance will receive a race T-shirt, finishing medal and goodie bag.
