Two veterans groups plan cooperation

By

After a meeting between their commanders, American Legion Young-Budd Post 171 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7883 are planning more cooperation between the two Westerville groups that represent military veterans.

According to a release, Legion Post 171 Cmdr. Pete Otteson, who also serves on Westerville City Council, initiated a meeting with VFW Post 7883 Cmdr. Mike Goodman to improve contact between the two groups.

To start the partnership, VFW members will assist the Legion Auxiliary in cleanup after the annual Veterans Day Dinner the Auxiliary hosts in November.

"The Westerville VFW Post is looking forward to assisting any way we can, any time we can," Goodman said in an email after the meeting, according to the release.

The two groups share many members, and the VFW post meets monthly in Post 171's Legion Hall at 393 E. College Ave. The VFW pays the Legion a fee for hall rental, but Goodman would like the building to have signage on the outside related to the VFW as well.

According to the release, a trade of hall maintenance work from the VFW is being considered.

Otteson said details will be discussed by the groups' trustees and officers.

Meanwhile, Otteson and Goodman are in agreement that better communication between the local veterans' groups would be preferable. Otteson said he also hopes to reach a similar understanding with the Legion Auxiliary.
