After a successful regular season, the Westerville North High School boys lacrosse season ended in disappointment.

North lost to Gahanna 15-14 in a play-in game for the Division I Central Region tournament May 20. North defeated Gahanna 15-7 on May 12.

"We had a great season," said coach Tom Welsh, whose team finished 12-4 overall and won the OCC-Central Division at 4-0. "We had an open offense that moved quite well. We got into the playoffs and the run-and-gun type of attack went away. Gahanna played a pretty good game."

North loses seniors Jared Allen, Brit Donahue, John Haynes, Michael Kehres, Evan Matsumoto, Kenny Macauley, Spencer Ressa, Dillon Sandusky, Matt Schaublin, Eric Soller, Matt Stewart, Kyle Watson and Doug Wintzer.

Macauley, a midfielder, had 46 goals and 20 assists. He also had 93 ground balls.

North won the Westerville Cup and the North-South helmet trophy by beating both Westerville schools. North beat Central 20-16 on May 5 and South 10-6 on May 14.

North won the OCC-Central ahead of Pickerington North (2-1), South (1-2), Central (1-3) and Pickerington Central (0-4).

Also eligible to return are juniors Scott Collins, Gunnar Dircks, Alex Durieux, Justin Hairston, Jake Pawlak, Brendan Sullivan, Eric Vermeire and Wesley Werstiuk and sophomores Eric Eichhorn, Jeremy Schocken and Kory Watson.

Central had a rocky second half of the season to finish 13-8.

The Warhawks' season ended with a 20-4 loss to Worthington Kilbourne in the first round of the Central Region tournament.

The Warhawks started 9-3 and then lost three in a row and five of their last nine.

"We lost four games by one goal," Ayle said. "We could have been 17-4. We lost to some teams that we were stronger than, but those teams were a little hungrier. We paid the price."

Central loses seniors Zach Aleshire, Tanner Ayle, Bill Calpin, Dom Colombini, Kamren Curtis, Jesse Green, Zach Lowe, Sean O'Neal, Kyle Stephenson, Zack Swick and Matt Taflan. Ayle, Calpin, Curtis and Taflan were each first-team all-OCC. Ayle was also second-team all-region. The other three were honorable mention.

The offense is expected to be strong next season if junior Jake Marburger and sophomore B.K. Wagner return. Sophomore Vince Bradburn will be the most experienced defensive player.

Also expected back are juniors Garrett Craig, Connor Johnson, Jalen Liggins, Michael Nash, Asa Plant, Ty Schroeder, Lee Tucker and Kyle Winston, and sophomores Tyler Crowe, Isaac Erckert, Zach Muncy and Tyler Reams.
