The Westerville Central High School girls basketball team earned its first postseason win since the 2007-08 season with a 56-39 victory over Briggs in a Division I district tournament first-round game on Feb. 16 at Hamilton Township.

The Westerville Central High School girls basketball team earned its first postseason win since the 2007-08 season with a 56-39 victory over Briggs in a Division I district tournament first-round game on Feb. 16 at Hamilton Township.

It also was the first postseason victory for coach Doug Etgen in his three seasons at Central.

"I was happy for the five seniors," Etgen said. "They were excited."

The Warhawks were 10-11 overall before playing seventh-seeded Gahanna in the second round on Feb. 23. The winner plays eighth-seeded Newark or Thomas Worthington in a district semifinal at 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28, at Olentangy Liberty.

Against Briggs, Central broke open a close game by outscoring the Bruins 30-17 in the second half.

"Briggs kind of surprised us and came out in a zone, which I wasn't expecting so much. But once we got adjusted to it, I thought we did a good job of sharing the basketball and making that extra pass," Etgen said. "We just made some adjustments at halftime. Adjustments not only against the zone, but we tried to get our transition offense involved a little bit more, which creates major opportunities for us and luckily we got some breathing room."

Senior Aly Jurcenko led the 22nd-seeded Warhawks with 14 points. Jurcenko, who led the team in scoring before Feb. 23 at 9.3 points a game, is the lone player on this year's team who played on the 2007-08 team that reached a district semifinal, where it lost to Dublin Coffman 53-29.

Senior Tabbytha Walker added 10 points against Briggs.

Tabetha Barber led Briggs with 16 points. The 23rd-seeded Bruins finished the season at 12-9.

•After losing to Westerville North 77-70 on Jan. 25, the boys team set a goal of winning its final six games of the regular season.

The Warhawks achieved that goal with a 57-55 double-overtime victory at Dublin Jerome on Feb. 18.

"Our whole focus was how we made that goal of finishing out six strong," coach Todd Minney said. "That is what that last game was. It wasn't about anything other than completing a goal that we had set. We worked hard to try and accomplish it and we were fortunate enough to get that. Our kids feel pretty good about accomplishing that goal."

Central finished the regular season 14-6 overall and 10-4 in the OCC-Cardinal Division, in a second-place tie with North and Olentangy Liberty.

The Patriots secured their share of second place by beating Westerville South 66-64 on Feb. 18, handing the Wildcats their first loss of the season.

Central, Liberty and North finished behind South (13-1) and ahead of Scioto and Jerome (both 4-10), Olentangy (3-11) and Marysville (2-12).

"I'm pleased with what our record is, but second place kind of stinks," Minney said. "Our kids know that. They really wanted a league title. I'm sure they're a little disappointed that they didn't reach that goal. South is a phenomenal team. They had a great season."

Against Jerome, Nick Vannett scored a game-high 17 points with 10 rebounds and Quentin Henderson had 13 points, with eight coming in the overtime periods.

Max Shawver added 10 points.

Central opened district tournament play against Mount Vernon on Feb. 22. The winner plays 10th-seeded Olentangy Orange or Hilliard Davidson in the second round at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at Hilliard Bradley.

Henderson entered the Mount Vernon game as the Warhawks' leading scorer at 13.1 points a game followed by Kamorin Harris (12.9) and Vannett (11.5).
