As a longtime teacher and coach at Westerville North High School, Rodger Elander understands the struggles the football program has endured.

Now, he is hoping to lead a turnaround.

Pending school board approval, Elander will become North's football coach. He was offered the position April 16.

He would replace Mike Owens, who resigned and was named coach at Franklin Heights in February.

Under Owens, the Warriors went 0-30 in three seasons. Their last victory came Sept. 19, 2008, when they defeated Westerville Central 21-17.

North has lost 35 consecutive games.

"There are a lot of alumni that are looking for good things to happen with the program again," Elander said. "They want to get excited about it again. I've worked with every coach except for Mike the past few years. I have a lot invested in the school and the community, and I'm going to give it my best shot."
